When my daughter started her freshman year of college, I remember thinking how different everything must feel compared to high school—bigger classes, less hand-holding, and professors who probably seemed intimidating at first. But one thing she told me after her first semester really stuck with me: going to her professors’ office hours made a huge difference in how confident and successful she felt in her classes. At first she was nervous to go, but she quickly realized that office hours are exactly what they sound like—time set aside for students to ask questions, talk through assignments, or get help when something isn’t clicking. Sometimes she only needed ten minutes, but those short conversations helped her understand the material so much better than trying to figure it all out on her own.

What surprised her most was how welcoming the professors were. They actually appreciated that she made the effort to stop by. Over time, those quick visits helped her build a rapport with a few of them, which made class feel less intimidating and more engaging. As a mom hearing about this from the sidelines, it was reassuring to know that such a simple habit could make such a big difference. If I could give one piece of advice to new college freshmen (and their parents), it would be this: don’t be shy about using office hours. It’s one of the easiest ways for students to get support, build confidence, and set themselves up for success during that first year of college.
